What a tattoo stencil actually is
A stencil is the line drawing an artist transfers onto skin before tattooing. It is not the finished design: it is only the lines that matter — outlines, the major internal lines, the anchor points for shading. Everything else is left out on purpose, because the artist fills it in freehand with the design next to them.
That is why a tattoo stencil is black on white with no grey. Thermal transfer paper only reproduces solid marks, and a line that is too faint or too thick simply does not transfer. Good stencil linework is closed, consistent in weight, and free of the soft gradients that look fine on a screen but mean nothing to a machine.

How the converter works
Upload a design — an AI generation, a drawing, a reference image, or a photo of an existing tattoo you want to reproduce. The tattoo stencil maker reduces it to outline linework: it traces edges, discards shading and colour, closes gaps, and evens out line weight so every stroke is tattooable with a liner.
Photos of healed tattoos are the hard case. Skin curves, lighting varies across the piece, and old ink has spread. The converter flattens the curvature and rebuilds the lines it can see rather than copying the blur, so what you get is a stencil of the design rather than a stencil of the photograph.

Printing it at the right size
A stencil that prints at the wrong size is useless — a piece meant for eight centimetres on a wrist cannot just be scaled up to a forearm. When you pick a placement, the export carries that size range so the print comes out at real dimensions instead of whatever the printer defaults to.
Print on standard thermal paper at 100% scale, or hand the file to your artist. Most studios use the same transfer process regardless of where the stencil came from.

Stencil vs. line art: what artists actually want
There is a difference between a pretty line drawing and a working stencil, and it comes down to what the artist will do with it. A stencil is a map, not a picture. It needs the outer silhouette, the lines that define the major shapes, and reference marks where shading begins and ends. It does not need every leaf vein or every strand of fur — those are drawn freehand, and a stencil that includes them gets in the way rather than helping.
The converter is tuned for that. It keeps structural lines heavy and drops decorative detail below a threshold, which is why a photorealistic lion comes back as a confident outline with a few interior anchors rather than a hairball of hatching. If you want more detail retained, say so in the notes; if you want less, say that.
One more thing artists care about: closed shapes. A line that almost meets another line transfers as a gap, and a gap on skin is a decision the artist now has to make on the spot. The converter closes those.

When to use it
The obvious case is a design you generated here and want to take to an appointment. The less obvious ones are where it earns its keep: reproducing a tattoo from a photo of someone else’s arm, recovering a design from a faded piece you want redone, extracting a logo or a piece of artwork into something an artist can transfer, and testing whether a design still reads when reduced to lines only — which is the honest test of whether it will age well.
Tattoo artists use it in the other direction too: convert a client’s reference in the consultation, print it, and place it on the skin while they are in the chair. That turns a twenty-minute conversation about size into a two-minute one.

Using a tattoo stencil generator instead of tracing by hand
The traditional route is tracing paper, a lightbox and a steady hand. It works, and plenty of artists still prefer it, but it costs twenty minutes per design and it does not scale when a client brings four references to a consultation. Turning a photo into a tattoo stencil
Turning a photo into a tattoo stencil is the request that comes up most, and it is also where the input matters most. A screenshot of a tattoo from social media has been compressed, sharpened and colour-graded; the converter is working from the artefacts as much as from the design. A clean, straight-on photograph in flat daylight gives a dramatically better result than a moody one with a flash.
Three things break a photo conversion: strong directional light that turns shading into false edges, a steep angle that foreshortens the design, and a busy background the tracer mistakes for linework. Crop tight before uploading. If the tattoo is on a curved limb, take the photo from the side that shows the whole piece without wrapping out of view.
Old and blown-out tattoos are the hardest case, because the ink has spread and the original line has doubled in width. Expect to clean those up, and expect the stencil to be an interpretation rather than a copy — which is usually what you want when redoing faded work anyway.

Printing and applying the stencil
Thermal transfer paper is four layers: the top sheet you print or trace on, a tissue layer, the purple carbon layer that does the work, and a backing sheet you throw away. Run it through a thermal printer, or draw over the design by hand with the carbon layer beneath. Standard inkjet output on plain paper will not transfer — the ink sits on top rather than releasing onto skin.
On skin, the sequence is: shave the area, clean it, apply a thin layer of stencil solution or deodorant stick, lay the sheet down without sliding it, press evenly for thirty seconds, and peel in one motion. Sliding is what smudges it. Let it dry for a few minutes before the first line, or the transfer lifts with the first wipe.
If the stencil comes out faint, the usual cause is too much solution rather than too little — a wet surface floats the carbon instead of gripping it.

What you actually hand the artist
The hardest part of getting tattooed is rarely the tattooing. It is the gap between the picture in your head and anything you can actually show an artist. Most people arrive at a consultation with a folder of screenshots that are close but not right, and then spend the session describing what they would change. Closing that gap is the point: you iterate on the idea yourself, for free, until the reference is genuinely yours, and you walk in with something specific instead of a mood board.
The same applies to converting a photograph. Photographs carry detail that skin cannot hold: soft gradients blur, thin mid-tones vanish, and dense texture turns into a grey blob after a few years. The conversion simplifies for ink — strengthening outlines, flattening noisy areas, keeping the features that make the subject readable at arm’s length.
The stencil export also carries the size annotation from the placement you picked, so the print comes out at the real dimensions instead of whatever the printer defaults to. A design meant to be eight centimetres on a wrist prints at eight centimetres.

Can I use a photo of an existing tattoo?
Yes. That is the most common use — reproducing a tattoo you or someone else already has. Straight-on photos in even light give the cleanest result.
Does it work on colour designs?
Yes. Colour and shading are dropped; only the linework survives, which is what a stencil needs.
Is the stencil free?

What resolution does the stencil come out at?

Can I edit the lines afterwards?
Download the PNG and open it in any editor. A stencil is black on transparent-white, so erasing or thickening lines is straightforward. Vector export is on the Pro roadmap.
Do I need a thermal printer to use the stencil?
To transfer it yourself, yes — thermal transfer paper needs a thermal printer, or you trace over the design by hand with the carbon layer underneath. If you are taking it to a studio, they already have one.
Will the stencil be the right size for my placement?
Pick a placement before exporting and the file carries that centimetre range, so printing at 100% gives real dimensions. Without a placement it exports at the design ratio and you set the size at print time.
Can it handle a photo of a faded old tattoo?
Yes, and it is one of the more useful cases. Old ink has spread, so the result is an interpretation rather than a copy — which is what you want when redoing faded work.
